Check your Form I-864A for errors before you file
A contract in which a member of the sponsor’s household agrees to make their income and assets available to support the intending immigrant, and accepts joint and several liability for that support. A single blank field or wrong-edition page gets the whole package returned, and since 07/10/2026 an invalid signature can be denied outright — and I-864A carries no USCIS fee of its own, so what a rejection costs is the delay on everything it was filed with. Here is exactly what to verify on your completed I-864A before it goes to USCIS.
How do I check my I-864A for errors?
Two ways: work through the checklist below yourself — edition, signatures, blank fields, dates, and the known problems for I-864A — or upload your completed form to FormGuard and get an automated line-by-line review in about a minute. Your risk level and the number of issues found are shown free; $39 unlocks the full report, and you pay only if you choose it. (A scanned PDF longer than 3 pages skips the free preview and goes straight to the paid report.) Your form image is never stored.
1. Confirm you have the current edition
USCIS accepts only the current edition of I-864A — filing a superseded version is an automatic rejection. The current edition is dated 08/24/26; the date is printed at the bottom of every page. All pages must come from the same edition. Download a fresh copy from uscis.gov right before you file.
Form I-864A is on the same 08/24/26 edition as Form I-864, and the two are filed together. USCIS published both on 2026-08-31 and announced no grace period, so download a fresh copy of each before you file.
2. Verify every signature block
Unsigned or wrongly-signed forms are rejected — or, under the signature rule effective July 10, 2026, denied outright with the filing fee kept and no chance to fix it. A typed name, a cursive or script font, a stamp, or a digital e-signature (such as DocuSign) is not a valid signature on a paper filing; only a handwritten ink signature — or a scan, photocopy, or fax of one — is accepted. An electronic signature counts only when it is captured through a USCIS online account during online filing. I-864A has 5 signature blocks to check:
Sign and date in ink. A stamped or typewritten name is not acceptable. Under the 07/10/2026 signature rule an invalid signature can be DENIED (filing fee kept, no opportunity to cure), not merely rejected: a typed name, a cursive or script font, and digital/e-signature software output (e.g., DocuSign) are all invalid on a paper filing. Only a handwritten ink signature — or a scan, photocopy, or fax of one — counts. An electronic signature is valid only when it is captured through a USCIS online account during online filing. Form I-864A is a contract between two people. A sponsor signature with no household-member signature, or the reverse, is not a contract at all — USCIS states it will reject any unsigned form.

By signing, the household member accepts joint and several liability for the support obligation, not merely for the accuracy of the numbers.
The interpreter completes their contact information and certification, then signs and dates.
Anyone who prepared the contract completes Part 8 and signs and dates it.
Each separate sheet must carry the applicant’s name and A-Number (if any), reference the page, Part and Item Number it answers, and be signed and dated.
3. Make sure no required section is incomplete
Leaving required fields blank (instead of writing “N/A” or “None”) is one of USCIS's most common rejection reasons. On I-864A, pay special attention to:
- Part 1, Items 1.a – 1.c: The household member’s full legal name
- Part 1, Items —: The household member’s mailing address, date of birth, A-Number (if any) and U.S. Social Security Number
- Part 2, Items 1, 2 or 3: Select exactly ONE relationship box: not the intending immigrant (then specify spouse, son or daughter 18 or older, parent, brother or sister, or other dependent); the intending immigrant who is also the sponsor’s spouse; or the intending immigrant who is also a household member
- Part 3, Items —: The household member’s employment status and current individual annual income — this is the figure the sponsor adds to their own on Form I-864 Part 6
- Part 4, Items 2.a – 2.c: The household member’s most recent tax year and the total income reported on that federal return, with a photocopy or IRS transcript of that return attached (or evidence of not being required to file)
- Part 5, Items —: The sponsor’s promise, contact information and certification — the sponsor completes their own half of the contract here
- Part 6, Items —: The household member’s promise, contact information and certification
4. Check every date — format and consistency
Dates must be written mm/dd/yyyy and must agree with your supporting documents and any other forms in the package. The date fields that most often cause problems on I-864A:
- Part 5 Item 10 and Part 6 Item 7 — the two signature dates — Both are required, and neither should post-date the package. A signed contract with one date missing is the most common defect on this form.
- Part 4, Items 2.a – 2.c — tax years — The year entered must match the return actually attached, and must be consistent with the tax years the sponsor reports on the I-864.
5. Re-check the known I-864A filing problems
From USCIS's own instructions and guidance, these are the specific problems to rule out on I-864A. Some get a filing rejected at intake; others surface later as a Request for Evidence or a denial:
- Not signed by BOTH the sponsor and the household member — USCIS states it will reject any unsigned form, and this one needs two signatures (a typed, script-font, stamped, or digital/e-signature is invalid where an ink signature is required; as of 07/10/2026 this is a denial with the fee kept, not merely a rejection)
- The household member’s most recent federal tax return (photocopy or IRS transcript) not attached, with no evidence of an exemption from filing
- One I-864A covering several household members instead of one per person
- No relationship box selected in Part 2, or more than one selected
- Income entered here that does not match the figure the sponsor carried onto Form I-864 Part 6
- Foreign-language document submitted without a complete certified English translation

What problems most often hold up a Form I-864A filing?
Not signed by BOTH the sponsor and the household member — USCIS states it will reject any unsigned form, and this one needs two signatures (a typed, script-font, stamped, or digital/e-signature is invalid where an ink signature is required; as of 07/10/2026 this is a denial with the fee kept, not merely a rejection); The household member’s most recent federal tax return (photocopy or IRS transcript) not attached, with no evidence of an exemption from filing; One I-864A covering several household members instead of one per person; No relationship box selected in Part 2, or more than one selected; Income entered here that does not match the figure the sponsor carried onto Form I-864 Part 6.
Which edition of Form I-864A is current?
The current edition of Form I-864A is dated 08/24/26. USCIS rejects forms filed on a superseded edition, so download a fresh copy from uscis.gov right before you file and confirm the edition date printed at the bottom of every page matches.
What happens if my I-864A is rejected?
USCIS returns the entire package unprocessed — and because I-864A travels with other forms, everything filed alongside it comes back too. You correct the error and refile the whole package, losing weeks or months. That is why a careful pre-filing check is the cheapest step in the whole process.
