Is a typed or digital signature valid on a USCIS form?

No. On a paper filing, only a handwritten ink signature — or a scan, photocopy or fax of one — is a valid signature. A typed name, a cursive or script font, a stamp, and a digital e-signature such as DocuSign are all invalid. Since 07/10/2026, an invalid signature is a denial with the filing fee kept and no chance to fix it on every form except N‑600 and N‑600K, which stay reject-only. An electronic signature is valid only when it is captured inside a USCIS online account during online filing.

What changed on July 10, 2026. A signature defect used to mean rejection: USCIS returned the package and you refiled. Under the signature rule effective 07/10/2026 it is a denial for most forms — the decision goes against you, the fee is kept, and there is no opportunity to cure. This is the single most expensive box to get wrong on a paper filing.

What counts as a signature, and what does not

The trap is that a form filled in on a computer looks finished. The signature field accepts typing, the PDF prints cleanly, and nothing warns you. It has to be printed and signed by hand.

How many signature blocks each form has

Missing one block is as fatal as signing none. Each form below links to its full pre-filing check, which lists every block, who has to sign it, and the rule for each.

Who has to sign — the part people miss

It is not always the applicant. Depending on the form, a petitioner, sponsor, employer, interpreter, preparer or attorney each has their own block, and an interpreter or preparer block left blank when one was used is its own defect. On forms filed for a child, a parent or legal guardian may sign in place of the applicant.

I-485 — Part 10 · Applicant

Sign and date. Under 14: parent or legal guardian may sign; guardian may sign for mentally incompetent applicant. Stamped/typewritten names NOT accepted; unsigned or invalid signature = REJECTED (8 CFR 103.2(a)(7)(ii)(A)). As of the 07/10/2026 signature rule, an invalid signature can be DENIED (filing fee kept, no chance to cure), not merely rejected. A typed name, a cursive or script font, or a digital/e-signature image (e.g., DocuSign) is invalid on a paper filing; only a handwritten ink signature, or a scan/photocopy/fax of one, counts. E-signatures are valid only when captured in a USCIS online account during online filing.

I-130 — Part 6 · Petitioner

Statement, contact info, declaration, and signature. Stamped/typewritten names NOT accepted; unsigned or invalid = REJECTED (8 CFR 103.2(a)(7)(ii)(A)). A typed name, a cursive or script font, or a digital/e-signature image (e.g., DocuSign) is invalid on a paper filing; only a handwritten ink signature, or a scan/photocopy/fax of one, counts. E-signatures are valid only when captured in a USCIS online account during online filing.

I-765 — Part 3 · Applicant

A typed name, a cursive or script font, or a digital/e-signature image (e.g., DocuSign) is invalid on a paper filing; only a handwritten ink signature, or a scan/photocopy/fax of one, counts. E-signatures are valid only when captured in a USCIS online account during online filing.

I-131 — Part 10 · Applicant

Statement, contact information, certification, and signature (Items 1-4). Sign and date; guardian rules apply for incompetent persons. Unsigned or invalid signature = REJECTED. Frequently asked questions

Can I sign a USCIS form with DocuSign?

Not on a paper filing. A digital or electronic signature service such as DocuSign is not a valid signature where an ink signature is required. Print the form, sign it by hand in ink, and mail the signed original (or a scan/photocopy/fax of the handwritten signature). An electronic signature is valid only when captured through a USCIS online account during online filing.

Does the ink have to be blue or black?

USCIS requires a handwritten signature in ink but the published instructions this page is built from do not specify a colour, so FormGuard does not assert one. What is specified is that the signature must be handwritten — not typed, not a script font, not stamped, and not a digital e-signature. Confirm any colour preference in your specific form instructions at uscis.gov.

What happens now if I forget to sign?

Since 07/10/2026 an unsigned or invalidly signed form is denied for most benefit requests — the filing fee is kept and there is no chance to correct it. Forms N-600 and N-600K are exempt and remain reject-only, meaning the package is returned unprocessed. That is why the signature blocks are the first thing to re-check before a package goes out.

Is a signature in a cursive font the same as signing?

No. A name set in a cursive or script font is typed text, not a handwritten signature, and it is invalid on a paper filing. This catches people who fill the PDF in on a computer, because the field accepts the typing and the form prints out looking complete.
