I filled out an old edition of the form — is that a problem?
Usually yes — filing a superseded edition is an automatic rejection. The exceptions are published per form rather than site-wide: USCIS sometimes keeps the previous edition acceptable for a grace period, and on Form G-28 it currently accepts two editions with no end date. The table below shows which editions each form accepts today. The edition date is printed at the bottom of every page of the form, and every page in your filing must come from the same edition even where two are acceptable. Because editions change without notice, download a fresh copy from uscis.gov immediately before you file rather than using one saved months ago.
Current edition date for each form
Verified from the USCIS form instructions on 2026-10-08. Editions change without announcement, so treat this as a starting point and confirm the date printed on the copy in your hands.

How to check the edition on your own copy
- Look at the bottom edge of any page — the edition date is printed there, usually as
Edition mm/dd/yy. - Check every page, not just the first. Mixing pages from two editions is its own rejection trigger, and it happens easily when someone reprints a single page to fix a typo.
- Compare it against the copy currently posted on uscis.gov/forms on the day you mail.
The reprint trap. The most common way a package ends up with mixed editions is innocent: you notice a mistake on page 4, download the form again to reprint that one page, and by then the edition has changed. Reprint the whole form, not the page.
USCIS replaced the 09/04/26 edition with 09/18/26 on September 18, 2026, with no grace period. Per uscis.gov/i-485, USCIS rejects the 01/20/25 and 09/04/26 editions if postmarked or submitted on or after that date, and accepts only the 09/18/26 edition. Verified 2026-09-22 against uscis.gov and the published form PDF.
USCIS is not accepting the 09/15/26 edition. A court order of Sept. 14, 2026 postponed the rule that introduced it (Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, et al., v. DHS, 26-cv-13799, D. Mass.), and USCIS continues to accept the edition shown above.

USCIS published the 09/09/26 edition on 2026-09-09 to match the H-1B and L-1 Visas final rule effective the same day. Verified 2026-09-09 against uscis.gov/i-129 and the live i-129.pdf (38 pages, all footers 09/09/26).
USCIS accepts BOTH the 09/17/18 and the 05/23/18 editions of Form G-28, despite the 05/31/2021 expiration date printed on the form. USCIS has said a new edition is coming but has not published a date or a cutoff.
The 07/28/26 edition is current. USCIS accepted the 01/20/25 edition for filings sent before Aug. 28, 2026; from that date only the 07/28/26 edition is accepted.
Form I-130A shares the Form I-130 page, instructions and edition date. Both are on the 04/01/24 edition, and both must come from that same edition.
Form I-864A is on the same 08/24/26 edition as Form I-864, and the two are filed together. USCIS published both on 2026-08-31 and announced no grace period, so download a fresh copy of each before you file.

Get a fresh 01/20/25 copy for any new examination. USCIS accepts the older 03/09/23 edition only where the civil surgeon signed it on or before July 2, 2025; for a signature on or after July 3, 2025 only the 01/20/25 edition is acceptable.
Unusually for a USCIS form, there is no wrong edition: USCIS accepts the current 07/22/25 edition and prior editions, and will even take a written request instead of the form. Use the current edition anyway — it asks for the evidence USCIS expects today.
Why USCIS is strict about this
Editions change when the questions change. A superseded edition may be missing a question USCIS now requires, or number its items differently from the current instructions, which makes the filing unreviewable against current criteria. That is why it is a completeness failure rather than something an officer can work around.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the edition date on a USCIS form?
At the bottom of every page, printed as an edition date such as 01/20/25. Check every page rather than just the first — all pages in your filing must come from the same edition.
How long can I use an old edition after a new one comes out?
That depends on the specific form: USCIS sometimes accepts a prior edition for a grace period and sometimes does not accept it at all, and the answer is published per form rather than as one site-wide rule. Check the form page on uscis.gov for the edition it currently accepts before you mail.
Can I mix pages from two editions?
No. Every page in the filing must come from the same edition. This most often goes wrong when a single page is reprinted to correct a typo after the edition has changed — reprint the whole form instead.
Does the edition matter when filing online?
Filing online through a USCIS account always uses the current version, which removes this failure mode entirely. It is one of the practical advantages of online filing where your form supports it.
